Members of Bishop Monkton Local History Group, together with guests and visitors from the surrounding area, were treated to a fascinating talk recently about the brown plaques of Harrogate. Chris Dicken is chairman of the Harrogate Civic Society Plaques Group.

Since 2016 Chris has identified all the heritage plaques in Harrogate, which mark people, places and events of interest, and he talked about some of them to pique our interest. There are currently 94 plaques, with two or three added each year. The plaques are coloured brown and are rectangular in shape.

In conjunction with Harrogate Civic Society Chris has produced a leaflet listing five different walking trails round the town to view the plaques.

For more information visit www.harrogateplaques.org or www.harrogatecivicsociety.org Alternatively try the interactive Android App by searching for “Harrogate Plaques” on the Google Play store. The trails should provide a fun and educational treasure hunt for adults and children alike.

Next Talk - Wednesday, 19th November at 7 pm in the Village Hall. This will be a talk about the story of the three Ripon Museums – the Workhouse Museum, the Prison and Police Museum and the Courthouse Museum … and there will be a surprising link to Bishop Monkton!
