On Friday 18th July, if you look out of your window you are likely to see herds of neighbours migrating across the Bishop Monkton savannah, looking for their next feed. This is, of course, the return of the Safari Supper.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, everyone who signs up is allocated a course (starter, main or dessert) which they have to cook for six people, including themselves, in their own home. The identity of the other guests is a surprise until they turn up on the doorstep. At the end of each course the host reads out an envelope telling everyone where they will be going for their next one. All of the courses are spent with new people, with no overlap, until the very end when everyone involved in the event gathers at one house for the fourth and final course of cheese and tea and coffee. Therefore, by the end of the night, participants will have been to three other houses, eaten a sit-down meal with 17 different people and had tea and coffee with everyone who took part – so it is a great way to get to know lots of people and sample different cooking!

A fundraiser for St John the Baptist Church, the cost for the whole evening, including the four-course meal, is £18. The Safari Supper is a much-loved occasion, back by popular demand; in fact, this will be the sixth iteration since 2012. The last one took place in 2023 with 18 pairs taking part and raising over £500.

So even if you don’t take part, keep an eye out on the evening of 18th July for your lesser-spotted neighbours as they safari from house to house!

For any intrepid explorers who are keen to take part, contact Sue Short on 01765 677496 or click to email by Sunday 29th June. Places are limited and it is a popular event, so do get in touch to secure your place.
