Bishop Monkton Local History Group has recently announced its Autumn programme, a series of four talks, all with very much a local focus.

All talks take place at the Village Hall and start at 7 p.m.

Admission is free for History Group Members. Non-members are always also very welcome, £10.

There will be a cash bar selling wine and soft drinks – open from 6.30 p.m.

The talks are as follows:-

Wednesday September 24th: Nidderdale – The Glistening Dale - Rowena Moir

Take a journey through Nidderdale and its history over the centuries by way of local geology, religion and industry discovering just how people worked and lived in an environment that was often harsh and difficult.

Wednesday October 22nd: Heritage Plaques – Chris Dicken

An insight into the history of heritage plaques in Harrogate, how they are created and highlighting the connections to Harrogate’s history, revealing stories about interesting places and people.

Wednesday November 19th: Ripon Museums - Richard Taylor

Ripon Museums' Trust was founded in 1982 and comprises a unique trio of the Workhouse, Prison & Police and Courthouse Museums. Stories of the lives of the poor and lawless, trials and punishments are depicted throughout these three museums. This talk is a portrait of life in Victorian England before the welfare system was introduced where the audience will learn about policing in Yorkshire, the courtroom sentencing and the aftermath of deportation.

Wednesday December 10th: Love and Chocolate- Phil Burton

From chemists to chocolatiers, the Terry family grew a substantial business in York and played a vital role in the city’s heritage. A history of a family dynasty and their home, the Arts and Crafts house ‘Goddards’, now a National Trust property, provides a fascinating insight into their living and working lives.
