There's a chance to find out about the fascinating history of the Women's Institute this coming weekend when the Burton Leonard WI celebrates its centenary with an exhibition tracing the history of the group through the ages. Documents and photographs will help to illustrate the story of BLWI, including the highly successful drama group. There won’t be a jar of jam or verse from Jerusalem in sight!

The exhibition will be held over the weekend of 15th and 16th February 2025 in Burton Leonard Village Hall, 10-4pm.

  • Admission is free to BLWI members;
  • Adults: £3.00 (includes tea/coffee and cake);
  • Children: free (includes drink of squash and a biscuit).

The event will be opened by Julie Clarke, Chair, North Yorkshire West Federation WI.

The WI was founded in Canada in 1897, at Stoney Creek, Ontario by Adelaide Hoodless. Its initial members were farmers’ wives. In was not until 1915 that the WI was founded in the UK by Madge Watt, a Canadian who had emigrated to Wales. Its aim was to inspire women living in rural communities to become involved in food production during the Great War. Since its humble origins the WI is now the largest women’s voluntary organisation in the UK, campaigning on issues that affect women and wider society.

Exhibition organiser Anne Townsend said:- "To reach 100 years old is a remarkable achievement, but especially for an organisation in a small village that relies on volunteers to keep the wheels moving. The story of BLWI over the last 100 years demonstrates the resilience and determination of countless women, who have drawn strength from the camaraderie provided by belonging to the WI to see them through both the darkest and lightest of times. The exhibition seeks to honour them and celebrate their achievements."
