As predicted by 'Bishop Monkton Today' a few weeks ago, BT have now begun a new attempt to remove the last remaining phone box in the village. The kiosk, outside the Mechanics' on Boroughbridge Road, was due for removal back in 2021 but was reprieved because of a plan, later abandoned, to use it as an EV charging point. According to BT, only one phone call was made from the kiosk in the last year!

However, BT have now formally started consulting North Yorkshire Council about the proposed removal with a deadline of 3rd May for responses. Many redundant phone boxes elsewhere have been turned into defibralator bases, book exchanges or other community facilities. They can be bought for £1 if listed as redundant by BT.

The Parish Council is expected to discuss the matter at its meeting next week.

There's a full explanation of the process on the website of the communications regulator, OFCOM.

Here's our earlier story on the phonebox.
