A teenager from Bishop Monkton has been featured in a film made by a charity helping people with a rare cancer. Molly Owen, who is sixteen and lives on Knaresborough Road, is in the film 'My Thyroid and Me; A Young Person's Cancer Story' made by the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust. The film, which was shot last Summer, is now available on Youtube and is scheduled for screenings in various places in the UK and abroad later this year.

Molly, who is now in the Sixth Form at St. Aidan's in Harrogate and who works part-time in the Masons, first showed symptoms of thyroid cancer when she was in her final year at Bishop Monkton School but the condition was not properly diagnosed until she was thirteen. She underwent surgery and other treatment at St.James's Hospital in Leeds and is now doing well.

The Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust, which is a national charity based in Newcastle, provides help for people with the condition which is extremely rare in children - there are only around ten cases diagnosed a year in the whole of the UK in children.
