To Burton Leonard

BISHOP MONKTON TODAY To Burton Leonard

A circular walk from Bishop Monkton to Burton Leonard and back.

4 miles – about 2 hours.

Burton Leonard is a very attractive village round a large village green. It has a pub and a shop/post office. There may be a diversion signed round the field* if there are cows with calves in it.

Starting outside the Masons Arms turn right up to the church. Cross Knaresborough Road and continue up past Church Farm into the caravan site. Follow the way-marked path up the left side of the caravan site and then over a succession of stiles through or beside fields. In the field* with electricity pylons go slightly to the right up the slope to the right of a wooden pylon and then on to the left of a large double metal pylon beyond it. Beyond this pylon cross the stile next to a gate onto a farm track. Follow this track and then the lane, turning right when the lane meets a road into Burton Leonard. Turn right at the end of this road by the church into the village.
Go up to the right of the village green and turn right into Peter Lane.

Follow the signs to the sports field. Follow the track past the tennis courts and round behind the cricket scoreboard and then to the right. At the end of the track go diagonally across the field to the left. Keep on the same line through two hedges and across fields and past an “H” shaped pylon. Keep on the same line across fields until you reach a hard track. Turn right down this track and continue for about a mile until you come to Knaresborough Road. Turn right and then left down Melrose Road. At the bottom of this road there are steps down into the car park of the Masons Arms.
