PARISH COUNCIL PROFILES - 4. ANDY HOGG
BISHOP MONKTON TODAY
Name:
Andy Hogg
Where do you live (roughly) in the village?
Harvest View, opposite the Village Hall.
Tell us about your immediate family
I am a Yorkshireman born and bred (although with Scottish heritage). My wife Joan is originally from Wakefield. We have a son and daughter, and three beautiful granddaughters aged four, seven and ten. I arrived in Bishop Monkton in 1998 initially on a short term rental but quickly fell in love with the place. Apart from a few years in Littlethorpe, we have been here ever since.
What is your professional background?
Recently retired, I spent my whole professional career in financial services. In 2008, I retired from my role as Compliance Director of a major regional employee benefit and wealth management business having previously developed the Corporate Services Division including building and gaining authorisation of our in house self-invested personal pension scheme. After a three year break, I spent the last fourteen years as a consultant for some of the ‘big four’ accountancy firms, investment consultancies and regulatory bodies conducting past business reviews and compensation projects.
What particular skills and experience do you bring to the PC?
I hope I can apply my professional skills and experience to the workings of the Council for the benefit of the village. I believe common sense and pragmatism is always a good place to start. My roles required attention to detail, forensic analysis and business acumen which may be of use to the Council on various projects. I am happy to be tasked with whatever the Council feels I can be most effective in achieving its goals.
Are there particular issues/matters you want to concentrate on?
The village and its community are quite special and unique. It deserves a Parish Council which reflects this. For me engagement is the key. It is vital the council fosters close relationships with the village organisations and institutions as well as the wider community. Encouraging villagers to bring forward the issues which matter to them and participate in finding solutions will help create an inclusive community with the Parish Council as its public voice. That said we should also remember, we can only work within our statutory remit. We can only do what we can do.
What do you hope that the PC can achieve for the village?
The Parish Council is the first layer of government. In my view its responsibility is to listen to the villagers’ views and concerns, their hopes and fears for the future of the community and be their champion, advocating on their behalf with the local authority and other statutory and corporate bodies to improve their lives and their families. Hands on, involved and practical. In short, be a Council we can all be proud of.
