Shooting has begun on a film about the history of Bishop Monkton School as part of a wider project recording the story of education in the village. Cameras were in the School yesterday (Monday) recording lessons, breaktimes and other activities as well as interviews with children and with parents. Four further days of filming will be taking place between now and early March.

The film will be presented by two children from the school assisted by four reporters. All six children were chosen following auditions last month.

The film is being made by the village's Local History Group as part of the 'Best Years of Our Lives' project which also includes the publication of a book and the staging of an exhibition at the School. The history of the School dates back to its opening in 1849 on the site of what is now a private house two doors down from the existing school building. But the project has also researched other private schools which existed in the village and also takes in the story of the Mechanics' Institution originally founded in 1859 as a centre for adult education and culture.

Screening of the film, the publication of the book and the exhibition are all scheduled for late May.
