"FLYING FROM THE STRAY’ - HARROGATE’S ROLE IN EARLY AVIATION TO STAR IN BM LOCAL HISTORY TALK

Local historian Peter Rix will tell the remarkable story of the role of Harrogate in the early years of aviation at Bishop Monkton’s Local History Group October meeting. 70,000 people crammed onto the Stray on one day in July 1911 to watch the Round Britain Air Race land and take-off in the town. It was controversial at the time with many locals up in arms at the idea. There were quite a few crash landings!
