Bishop Monkton's annual Beck Tidy time has come around once more and will take place this year on Friday 15th November starting at 9.30 a.m., usually taking between one and three hours.

Organiser, Paul Collinson, writes

"A bit of background info first. A number of us have been doing some “beck maintenance” through the year. A particular focus has been on what we call the “village green” section, from the old Lamb & Flag up to the Masons. We have cut back the overgrown sides of the beck to the original stone lined facing. We estimate that this widened the beck in this section by around 4-5”. Not only does this look great (hope you agree) but it should help to reduce blockages etc in times of flooding.

In addition to the above, we removed in May, from the full length of the beck, as much Himalayan Balsam as we could, prior to it seeding. This invasive species needs to be removed on regular basis if possible. Some of it has grown back but significantly less than usual overall.

As a result of the above the “village green” section requires very little, if any, attention on our tidy day. Our focus needs to be on the following:

-Masons up to the road junction, by the Church
-From the ford down to where the beck crosses under the road.

Cheers
Paul"

There has been a wonderful response to Paul's earlier appeal for help, so much so that a full quota of volunteers has now been allocated to the clearance of each of the above sections.

Paul (and the village) are extremely grateful to all those who have offered their assistance.
