Flood Warnings

Beck Flooding - click here - when levels are above 0.55m then flooding will probably start
Roecliffe/Boroughbridge Road Flooding - click here - when levels are above 1.6m then flooding will have started.
Flooding in the village, from the Beck, occurs reasonably regularly (two or three times a year) after very heavy rain and is probably on the increase. Because of individual actions taken, it's been a few years since there has been any structural damage or domestic flooding. However, climate change might well change that as would uncontrolled development in the catchment area of the beck (from higher land along and onwards to the west of Knaresborough Road.
Also the road to Roecliffe (and Boroughbridge) floods, more frequently and to a greater depth, up to 6 feet, (closing the road). This water comes from the river Ure, on the north side of the road and at times will cover a vast amount of land from the edge of the village to just past the narrow Holbeck bridge, from where the land then rises.
The flooding from the Beck in the village will usually be within 6 to 24 hours of very heavy rain - it goes up and comes down fairly swiftly. This will likely affect St John's Road, Main Street (near the Ford), Claremont Lane and the start of Boroughbridge Road (to about the track to Ashfield Farm). There can be pockets elsewhere but these are more likely to be related to manhole blowouts (which can also happen in the afore mentioned area).
The flooding in the road to Roecliffe/Boroughbridge will usually commence say 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain, assuming it has been the same up in the Dales as it takes a while for the water to come down river.
There is an excellent website (RiverLevels.uk) that provides regular (15 minute) updates of the level of the Beck (bridge by the Masons) and of the Ure (from nearby Weswick Weir) - the graphs in particular give a good warning of problems ahead. The links are at the top of the page.
